Computer hardware basics matter in IT support because many tickets start with a simple question: is the issue caused by software, settings, cabling, or a physical part?

This is not about memorizing parts for the sake of memorizing. It is about understanding enough hardware to ask better questions and make safer support decisions.

CPU

The CPU is the processor. It runs instructions and affects how quickly the computer can handle tasks.

In support work, CPU issues are not always hardware failures. A computer may feel slow because one application is using too much CPU, the device is overheating, or the machine is simply too old for the workload.

RAM

RAM is short-term working memory. If a computer does not have enough RAM, it may slow down when many browser tabs, Office apps, remote tools, or line-of-business programs are open.

Common support signs include freezing, slow switching between apps, and heavy disk activity when memory is full.

Storage

Storage is where Windows, applications, and files live. Most support environments now prefer SSDs because they are much faster than older hard drives.

Storage problems can look like slow boot, application delays, corrupted files, clicking noises on old hard drives, or Windows repair loops.

Motherboard
